Animals love its sweet taste, so even a spilling a small amount on your garage floor can end up in the dog's stomach pretty quickly. Promptly wipe up any spilled fluid as it is highly toxic. Always wear safety goggles when working on your Liberty. Removing the coolant reservoir cap on a warm engine could cause the cap to fly off at a high rate of speed and fluid to spray out of the reservoir. But doesn't explain the bubble or the fluid rising and falling in the radiator. These coolants will typically say 50/50 or pre-mixed on the front of the coolant bottle. Third, it's possible that your radiator cap spring isn't as strong as it should be, and is letting coolant into the overflow tank before it should. Some coolants will come premixed-that is, you don't need to add any water. Mix the coolant / antifreeze with distilled water so that you have a combination of 50% coolant and 50% water. Be sure to check your owners manual to determine the correct type of fluid to add - for Jeeps, it will typically be in a section titled Fluid Capacities in the back of your manual. The video above shows you where the coolant reservoir in your Liberty is located and how to add coolant / antifreeze. Make sure to check your engine when it is cold for an accurate reading. Engine coolant / antifreeze circulates through your engine to keep it cool in the summer but won't freeze in the winter. ![]() Replacing the accessory belt is smart if you need it soon, since you have to take it off and put it back on anyway.Adding engine coolant (also known as antifreeze) to your 2002 Jeep Liberty is pretty easy. Radiator Cap - Remove the radiator cap before draining. Drain Reservoir - Remove coolant / antifreeze from the reservoir. Find Reservoir - Locate the coolant / antifreeze reservoir and clean it. The clean way to drain is to use the draincock at the bottom of the radiator, but its a whole lot faster (and messier) to pull the lower hose. Same stuff, different colors, pick your poison. While you do the job, draining and flushing the cooling system if you need it soon, is smart, it will be half done while doing the job. Open the Hood - How to pop the hood and prop it open. They use Mopar HOAT 5/100 coolant or Zerex G-05. NAPA sells G-05, mix it 50/50 with distilled water. This gasket seems like one of the newer silicone shaped gaskets, designed to work without any sealant, in fact using RTV or other sealants with them usually causes a leak, just bolt it up dry or a little wet with the coolant.īolt up the water pump, tighten down in a criss-cross fashion.īolt on the idler wheel you took off the tension arm.ĭon't forget to use the correct coolant, either Dealer Chrysler HOAT or Zerex G-05. So get some Permatex Hi-Temp thread sealant and put it on the threads of the longer bolts. Three of the bolts are longer than the rest, they pass through the timing chain cover and bolt into the engine block, they have residue of thread sealant on them. Pull the bolts and pull the water pump off. Put a pan under the front of the engine to catch the anti-freeze. You'll have to unbolt the idler wheel on the tensioning arm closest to the water pump to get access to one of the water pump bolts behind it. 2002 Jeep Liberty oil pressure light comes on in cold. The only aftermarket water pumps people are NOT saying bad things about are AC Delco and Gates, perhaps Beck Arney. ![]() I've read a lot of water pumps, even new are NOT lasting very long at all, the industry is just pumping out bad crap. You can't replace the shaft seal on the water pump yourself, you just have to get a new one. If its just the seal between the pump body and engine, the body of the pump should be fairly dry and NOT slinging off the pulley, obviously the seal itself is a lot cheaper than the whole water pump. If the seal on the shaft failed, then at least the bottom half of the pump body would be wet and the pulley would be slinging the leaked coolant everywhere (sounds like your case). I just did it on my 3.7L Commander this weekend, its easy peazy.Įither the seal on the water pump shaft fails or the seal between the body and engine fails.
